Stop Gum Disease Before It’s Too Late

Comprehensive & Comfortable Periodontal Therapy

Gum disease is extremely common. In fact, 80% of American adults experience gum disease, otherwise known as periodontal disease. And most people don’t know they have it! While gum disease can do major damage to your oral health, and even lead to tooth or bone loss, if caught early it can be easily treated.

At Comfort Care Dental, we place a high priority on combating gum disease as a foundational treatment for keeping you healthy. While we’ll do our best to keep your gum tissue healthy before gum disease can creep in, we also offer a number of gum disease treatments that can help fight off developed cases and get you back to the healthy smile you love.

You might need periodontal treatment if you’re experiencing…

  • Constant bad breath
  • Receding gums or a “toothy” smile
  • Tender, swollen, or red gums
  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing your teeth (resulting in “pink in the sink”)

Even if you are experiencing none of these, gum disease could still be developing without your knowledge. By receiving a dental exam twice a year, gum disease can be caught early and treated.

The Dangers of Gum Disease

Gum disease is often linked to smoking, stress, family history, medication, and not keeping up with oral hygiene.

While gum disease can wreak havoc on the health of your mouth, it can also lead to problems with your whole-body health.

Gum disease can increase your risk of….

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Mortality with diabetes
  • Adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as low birth weight

For those experiencing gum disease, periodontal therapy and better oral hygiene strategies have been shown to reduce gum disease and these associated risks.

How We Treat Gum Disease

Whether you’re in the beginning stages of periodontal disease or you have a developed case, we have options that can help.

When you come to our office, we’ll examine your teeth, gums, and jaw to determine the state of your gums and whether periodontal treatment might be necessary.

From there, we’ll recommend a treatment that works for you. Generally, for patients experiencing gum disease, cleanings and exams will need to be completed once every 3-4 months to keep gum disease under control after periodontal therapy is complete.

Deep Cleaning

While a routine teeth cleaning will remove tartar build up and reduce decay above the gumline, if you’re beginning to experience gum disease, a more thorough cleaning is required.

For patients with gum disease, we recommend scaling and root planing, otherwise known as a deep cleaning. Using specialized tools, we’re able to remove periodontal disease-causing bacteria, tartar, and plaque below the gumline.

This treatment is completed is 2 steps:

  • Scaling: All plaque and tartar pockets are completely removed from underneath your gumline.
  • Root planing: Your tooth roots are smoothed using a scaling tool, helping your teeth naturally reattach top your gums.

Sedation Dentistry for Deep Cleaning Treatment

It’s completely understandable to be nervous prior to going to a dental hygienist for gum disease treatment. At Comfort Care Dental, we’re proud to offer you the largest selection of sedation options in Idaho. Our options will provide you with a more comfortable periodontal treatment experience, and will allow you to get the care you need in a relaxing environment.

For periodontal therapy, we offer…

  • IV Sedation
